Yewande 103 presents a trilogy of films directed by Alexandrina Hemsley; Maelstrom Under Glass, My Heart Is Mine as It Is Yours and Ours and An Anatomy of a Phoenix. The three films were created in 2020-2021, and each in stages of lockdown. Each film is an act of retrieval, offering space for tracing past and future autobiographical and systemic material.

Maelstrom Under Glass spills slowly
across cell edges
weeping open…

Maelstrom Under Glass calls upon several strands of intimacy as pathways to trauma-healing to offer up dynamic spaces of repair. Alexandrina’svivid, multidisciplinary layers of movement, bio-mythographical texts and collage speak to retrieving oneself from sites of harm. These layerings evoke a reclaiming of interior texture; evoking re-embodiment after prolonged dissociation, inner storms, intersectional subjectivity as sites of marbling, and the complicated shine of a body meeting itself once more.

My Heart Is Mine as It Is Yours and Ours

Commissioned by the Live Art Development Agency in 2021 for Live Art Histories and Futures, a research project mapping the impact and influence of the Live Art sector in the UK, supported by Live Art UK and Arts Council England.

My Heart Is Mine as It Is Yours and Ours draws upon memories and notes of reflection from the LADA team, prompted by a series of questions devised by Alexandrina, and uses footage that hasn’t been presented from Alexandrina’spersonal archive of practice (disregarded texts and film rushes on the ‘cutting room floor’). My Heart Is Mine as It Is Yours and Ours calls in the occupation of non-linear time as resource for reparative actions.

Alexandrina concerns themselves with retrieving from the past and projecting into the future, the tools, stories and sensitivities for embodied reflections, movements (as in dancing and as in change) to support the imperative of calling in the close, colliding dialogues between history, present and future.

Through these hoped for acts of space-making, movement and re-sensitising, comes an attempt to cool the tyrants of internalised racism, ableism and misogyny (which so often command/erase marginalised bodies into stillness and silence). Concurrently, My Heart Is Mine as It Is Yours and Ours offers to unfix the physicality of ‘‘objective’ archives and the dominant systems of oppression through which archives and knowledges of history operate in UK arts and culture.

The cyclical, multi-authored film voices an invitational space to recall your own felt-level material and autobiographical, systemic and relational changes over time.

An Anatomy of a Phoenix

Yewande 103 and Northern School of Contemporary Dance BA3 2021

‘Residence time is ‘the duration of persistence of a substance in an absorbed, suspended or dissolved state’ Christina Sharpe,  In the Wake: On Blackness and Being (2016)

The Anatomy of A Phoenix is an intricate improvisation score  calling upon cycles of repair for processes of returning to intimacy. The score cycles through four stages: descent, burning, rising and flight, holding tensions between beginnings, endings and transformation. The score calls upon dancing as a process of making sense to ourselves, as active witnessing and listening.

Phoenix’s live for 500 years,  beyond human time...more like nature time, geological time, a reassuring amount of time in terms of personal growth, the processing of trauma and of time taken to heal, surface courage and processes of recovery.
